Sri Lanka is a remarkable country for birds. Although it is small in land size, it has a wide range of climate and habitat and about 459 species of birds. Out of these, 216 are resident and these include the most important 34 species that are recognized as endemic to the country. A further 219 species have been recorded as migrants to the country and 24 species are resident and migrant. Majority of these migrate to Sri Lanka during the northern winter and present from August/September to April/May. In Sri lanka, birds are surprisingly tame whether they are in a national park or in an urban setting. Many bird photographers remark on how easy it is to take pictures of the birds. Even birds that is familiar worldwide. Such as many waders, present better photographic opportunities in sri lanka than they do in other parts of the world. also, remarkably new species continue to be discovered.

Full Details of Itinerary

Day 01 - Wilpattu National park

When you land to the island, you will get a higher welcome by our views lanka representative and will get a comfortable car or van with an experienced chauffer guide for your whole tour. According to this tour plan you will transfer to Wilpattu area first. It’s about 170Km away from Airport and it will take three hours. On the way to wilpattu, we can visit Anavilundawa Bird Sanctuary. This sanctuary comes under the Department of Wildlife Conservation. It is 1,397 hectares in extent and primarily a complex of large tanks and adjoining forest. The largest of the tanks holds a large breeding colony of Herons and other water Birds mainly during the months of April – June. The dominant species is the Openbill, Great Cormorant, White Ibis and a host of other species occurs here. A stroll on the bund of this tank will allow one to get close to the breeding colony. During the season many species of migrants can also be seen. After take some nice photographs, we will visit another great place to view birds, That is Nawadankulama Tank, It is a very large tank which dries during the dry season exposing large area of lake shore studded with small islands of trees and shrubs. This is the southernmost location in the country where some of the species which are commonly found in the northern part of the country such as the Collared Dove, Indian Grey Partridge can be regularly sighted. It is also a location favored by large flocks of migrant ducks. One could walk on the bund as well as drive down to the dried up tank shore. In evening hours we will reach Wilpattu hotel and night will stay there.

Day 02 - Transfer to Habarana

To get an unforgettable experience, we have arranged a full day safari at Wilpattu National park, with a well experienced safari jeep driver and comfortable safari jeep. This park is the largest and one of the oldest National Parks in Sri Lanka. It is 1,317 square kilometers (131, 693 hectares) and ranges from 0 to 152 meters above sea level. Nearly one hundred and six lakes (Willu) and tanks are found spread throughout Wilpattu. These water bodies though looking similar to lakes are formed by flat basin like depressions with the surface containing pure rain water. This is the national park which is among the top national parks world-renowned for its leopard (Panther Paradis kotiya) population. You can take time to take photos and feel the nature as you need and your lunch and snacks will supply by views lanka team throughout the journey. After safari, you will transfer to Habarana area, for our next destination.

Day 03 - Habarana

Today morning according to the Itinerary, we will climb to world famous Sigiriya Lion rock. It’s a A UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Lion Rock is well known for its frescoes, the mirror wall, the Gardens (the water gardens, the boulder gardens and the terraced gardens) and its overall magnificence which is quite visible to the surrounding areas miles away. After lunch from a simple local rice and curry resturant, you can go to visit wonderful Asian Elephants at Minneriya National park. It is the largest known meeting place of Asian Elephants in the world. During this period herds up to 300 elephants are seen at the 8,890 hectare park within a few square kilometers of the Minneriya Reservoir. In August and September each year during the dry season, wild elephants from the surrounding wilderness in search of food and water, makes their way to the shores of the Minneriya Reservoir adjoining the Minneriya National Park. In evening, on the way to the hotel, you can get a hearable body massage from a most famous Ayurveda spa center, after that you will feel more relax in the late evening hours, you can satay leisurely at swimming pool in your hotel. Overnight you will stay at Habarana.

Day 04 - Transfer to Knuckeles

Today after breakfast, we will visit Kandalama Sanctuary; there is 55 acre forest with a variety of trees, some 100 years or more in age, around the Kandalama tank including medicinal plants and a rich and varied bird life. Kandalama offers one of the best bird watching opportunities in the north central province. The diversity in habitat and the tank provides the visitors the opportunity to observe more than 145 species, which is almost one third of total number of bird life in Sri Lanka. This population consists of the arboreal, terrestrial and aquatic Birds. One can also observe many waders and raptors too. After lunch, you will transfer to Knuckles area. This mountain range situated in Central Sri Lanka that takes the shape of clenched fists is referred to as Knuckles Mountain range. The colonial British gave this name based on its formation of recumbent folds and peaks. However, it is known in the local tongue as Dumbara Kanduvetiya, meaning ‘mist-laden mountain range’. It has an amazing diversity of plants, and species that makes it stand out as one of the most amazing places to visit in Sri Lanka. A unique feature here is that the Knuckles seems to have its own climatic microcosm and is home to a higher percentage of the island’s biodiversity - despite its small size. The vegetation found at Knuckles is divided into five types, these are: semi-evergreen, sub montane, montane and riverine forests and the pathana and savannah grasslands. To feel the nature and to be relaxed, you would be able to stay two nights at Knuckles mountain range.

Day 05 -Knuckles Wilderness Bird Sanctuary

Today when you wake up, you will be wonder about the real beauty of nature.This highlands are extremely wet throughout the year, with an average annual rainfall of over 4000 mm, and temperature that ranges between 18-20° centigrade. The area is also exposed to strong winds during monsoon periods. The wide array of climate and landscape features in the knuckles camping site have resulted in a rich composition of animals and plants, some of which are unique to Sri Lanka. Over 130 species of birds inhabit the Knuckles Mountain Range and 20 of these are endangered. The endemics are represented by the Sri Lankan white eye, Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, Layard's Parakeet, Sri Lanka Spur Fowl, Sri Lanka Spot Wing Thrush, Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon, Sri Lanka Green Pigeon and the rare Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush. Migrants include Asian Paradise Flycatchers, Kashmir Flycatcher (which is endangered) Indian Pitta, Common Sandpiper, Gray and Forest Wagtails, Greenish Warbler and the Indian Blue Chat. Night at a tent in middle of the mountains range

Day 06 - Transfer to Kandy

Transfer to Kandy (UNESCO World Heritage Site). En route (Optional) visit the Golden Temple Caves in Dambulla (UNESCO World Heritage Site) Visit one of the many Spice Gardens found in Matale, a district famous for spice cultivation in Sri Lanka. Grown in these Spice Gardens are many types of spices found in Sri Lanka including cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla pepper etc. In the evening visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of The Buddha and the Royal Palace complex of the final King of Sri Lanka.

Day 07 - Inginiyagala Gal Oya National Park

In the morning visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. This garden was first established in the 14th century as a pleasure garden for the Kandyan Kings. The garden was later established as a botanical garden in 1821 under the British rule in Ceylon. The garden is home to more than 4000 species of flora including the first ever tea plant in Sri Lanka. Rest of the day, relax or explore the city of Kandy. In the evening attend a Sri Lankan traditional dance performance.

Day 08 - Ella

After breakfast driver to Nuwara Eliya in the tea growing hill country of Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya was created as a home away from home for the British offices in Sri Lanka during the colonial period and is famous for the many floral gardens and the British colonial buildings. En route visit a Tea Factory and a tea estate. In the afternoon visit The Park in the city.

Day 09 - Ella

To a brief city tour in Nuwara Eliya enjoying the colonial building, vegetable and flower gardens. Also visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens. This garden was established in year 1861 as an experimental Cynchona Plantation for the production of the Malaria antidote Quinine. Hakgala Botanical Gardens is one of the most picturesque gardens in the country with a vast collection of flora found in the higher elevations and cooler climates of Sri Lanka.

Day 10 -Horton Plains National Park

After breakfast transfer to Bentota, one of the most famous south west coast beach destinations in the island. Check in to the HOTEL AND spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 11-Sinharaja Rain Forest

Visit Lunuganga, the country residence and lifetime creation of the world renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa. Lunuganga is not a garden of colourful flowers, neat borders and gurgling fountains: it is a civilised wilderness, an assemblage of tropical plants of different scale and texture, a composition of green on green, an ever changing play of bold and shade, a succession of hidden surprises and sudden vistas, a landscape of memories and ideas. The whole of it can be taken in with a brisk fifteen-minute walk, but it requires days to explore its every corner and appreciate its changing moods.

Day 12 - Udawalawa National park

In the morning visit another of the famous private gardens in Sri Lanka, The Brief Garden created by Bevis Bawa, the elder brother of Geoffrey Bawa the famous architect. Brief Garden was the home and garden of Bevis Bawa, who was a Planter, Soldier, Painter, Cartoonist, Columnist, Sculptor and a prominent Landscape Gardener of Sri Lanka.

Day 13 -Yala National park

Departure transfer to the airport.

Day 14 - Bentota

After breakfast transfer to Colombo and check in to the hotel. In the late afternoon do a city walk in Colombo with Mark Forbes, the expert on Colombo walks (depends on the availability for Mark Forbes).

Day 15 - Airport Transfer

Departure transfer to the airport.
